Title
Carr, Hester Jane: Freedom Suit
Subject
Slavery--Virginia--Petersburg
Description
Hester Jane Carr, born in 1816 in Accomack County, Va., to free parents, moved to New York City in 1835, and found work as a house servant. In 1836, she met a woman from Columbus, Georgia, who offered Hester work as a "waiting maid." During their travels south, the woman convinced Hester Jane to pose as her slave as they entered Virginia. Once they arrived in Petersburg, Virginia, the woman, claiming Hester to be her slave, sold her a Richard R. Beasley for $750. This record documents her fight to regain her freedom.
