Slavery--Virginia--Petersburg
Description
An account of the resource
Hester Jane Carr, born in 1816 in Accomack County, Va., to free parents, moved to New York City in 1835, and found work as a house servant. In 1836, she met a woman from Columbus, Georgia, who offered Hester work as a "waiting maid." Once they arrived in Petersburg, Virginia, the woman, claiming Hester to be her slave, sold her a Richard R. Beasley for $750. This record documents her fight to regain her freedom.
